State senators hearing about flood insurance hikes

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Coastal homeowners who are paying higher premiums for wind and flood insurance are getting a chance to vent with state senators.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that the Coastal Insurance Subcommittee holds a public hearing Wednesday at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort Gateway Campus in Hardeeville.

The hearing centers on a bill proposed by Sen. Tom Davis to lower wind insurance rates by luring more insurers to the state and giving homeowners more information to compare policies.

The Beaufort Republican says that there is a disconnect between the risk that insurance companies are assuming and the premiums they are charging.

The newspaper reported that an analysis indicates coastal insurance rates have risen more than 70 percent during the past 10 years.
