Nonprofit works to bring families in need Thanksgiving meal

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston Basket Brigade is asking people in the Lowcountry to consider volunteering or donating this Thanksgiving holiday.

The nonprofit is the largest Thanksgiving effort in the Charleston Tri-County area and  provides local families in need with all the ingredients needed to cook a complete Thanksgiving meal.

On Nov. 26, hundreds of volunteers will meet at the Charleston Area Convention Center to assemble and deliver the meals.

It costs $30 to feed a family of 6-8 and 100% of donations are used to purchase food. Each family receives a basket with a turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, cranberry sauce, fresh rolls, butter and pumpkin pie.

Since its start in 2009, the nonprofit has raised $238,000 and fed more than 47,000 residents.

This year's goal is to raise $100,000 and feed more than 3,000 families.
