High School Hero Week 11: West Ashley's Dekeiya Cohen

Posted: Updated:

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) – Baylor coach Kim Mulkey added Dekeiya Cohen, a 6-foot-2 power forward from West Ashley High School and this week's High School Hero.

Traveling hundreds of miles away from home for a basketball program was a bear of a decision for Cohen, but she wanted to be a bear, a Baylor Bear.

"It was pretty crazy. I narrowed it down towards the end of the summer. I knew where I'd go when I went on my official visit to Baylor, fell in love with it, so glad it's over so I can relax and get my Baylor gear," said Cohen after signing her letter of intent on Wednesday.

Cohen is like any other college-bound athlete on signing day – she's looking to be named an All-American and to win a national championship. For her those wishes are definitely reasonable.

Baylor went 40-0 and won a national title just tow years ago, led by All-American Brittney Griner.

"It's a winning program. I always wanted to play for a winning program. She has great players come to Baylor," Cohen said.

Cohen hopes to be the next in a long line of champs. She averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds per game for West Ashley as a junior. Her senior year, she's looking for more before she takes her game to the NCAA.

"I knew I was going to go before I went, ‘That's pretty far.' Once I went, I said, ‘It's OK, my parents will find a way to get there anyway,'" she said.
