CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Salvation Army bell ringers are back and they're counting on the generosity of strangers to bring in a record number of donations this holiday season.

It's the time of year when pocket change can make a difference in someone's life -- and no donation is too small.

"Help someone here in the community do what others would love to be able to do, and that is to have a great Christmas, things underneath their tree, food on their table and smiles on their faces," said Maj. Tom Richmond, the commanding officer of the Salvation Army.

The bell ringers will be spread out over Northwoods and Citadel malls, and Bi-Lo stores. After Thanksgiving, they will appear at area Wal-Marts, Piggly Wiggly stores and along King Street in downtown Charleston.

Their goal is a daunting one: raise $250,000.

"That money not only helps at Christmas, but it also helps throughout the year to turn on lights for folks, make sure water is running, make sure food is on the table. Sometimes it goes to help for medical needs and things like that," said Richmond.

So follow the bell, give up a little pocket change, and help someone else have a merry Christmas.

People can also help the Salvation Army by contributing the Angel Tree. That program kicks off Wednesday, Nov. 20.
