NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the North Charleston Police Department are investigating a deadly accident involving an off-duty sergeant with the Charleston Police Department.

Officials said Sergeant Tony W. Person, Jr., 35, of Ladson, was riding a motorcycle near the intersection of Dorchester Road and Trump Street at about 1 a.m. when he collided with a vehicle.

Officials said the vehicle pulled out in front of the biker and Person swerved to miss the vehicle.

He ran into the back of the vehicle that pulled out in front of him and was hit by a second vehicle, officials said.

Person was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

"The department is in shock from the news about the death of Sergeant Tony Person," said Police Chief Gregory Mullen. "We are mourning the loss of a dedicated police officer, father, and friend who will be dearly missed by everyone.  Tony served the department and community with honor, dedication, and humility."

Person served the city at the surrounding tri-county area for 13 years. He was most recently assigned as a member of Patrol Team 4 and was responsible for serving the area of West Ashley. He was also a member of the department's Explosive Device Unit.

Charleston police said Jan. 2 that a memorial service had been planned for 10 a.m. on Jan. 9 at Summerall Chapel at The Citadel.
