NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Over the years, the Tri-County Family Ministries has helped nearly 5 million people, and on Monday that number grew with the organization's 30th annual Thanksgiving meal.

Whether it was on bike or on foot, nearly 500 hungry people found their way to the Tri-County Family Ministries for a hot meal.

Through the door they found plates filled with barbecue, macaroni, vegetables and brownies. It was all supplied by Jimmy Hagood's BBQ.

"They come with their broken stories, and they come with an empty stomach so we want to fill their empty stomachs, but as we hear their broken stories, we step in on Christ's behalf," said Matthew McCormick with the Church of the Resurrection.

And a blessing is exactly what Tommencita Washington said she and her 2-year-old daughter needed.

"I'm not working and I'm financially strapped and on the verge of being homeless," Washington said.

Washington's struggles make it hard for her to provide for her daughter.

"I didn't know she was that hungry," Washington said. "And when she said, ‘Yay, food!' and everyone noticed, I was like, ‘Wow, she really was that hungry,'" Washington said.

On Monday, Washington and her daughter went home with a full stomach and a full bag of groceries.

"It's just a great blessing that someone is able to outreach to the community and give a helping hand, and I appreciate it. I'm thankful for it," she said.

It's all part of the nonprofit's mission that started 30 years ago.

On Wednesday, Tri-County Family Ministries will serve another huge meal with the help of the RiverDogs and Wal-Mart. Fried chicken is on the menu.
