Break-ins continue at Georgetown County churches

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) – Neighbors on Tuesday morning drove by and found the front door to Andrews Holiness Church kicked in. Once inside, members noticed two amplifiers had been stolen.

The scene prompted members of Six Mile Crossing Church of God across the street to check out their church campus.

"Woke up this morning with a frantic door knock on my door and it was one of our church members, so obviously I got up," said Chad Smith, pastor of Six Mile Crossing.

"That's when we realized the guitar my husband owns and the base guitar that my father in law owns were, had been stolen," said Kathy Hammond, a member of Six Mile Crossing.

Hammond says a back door was left open and deputies with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Department found a hand print on a back window.

"I just feel like they don't have heart to be breaking into a church," Hammond said. "I don't even have words."

Just a few days ago, thieves broke into the same churches. Four hundred dollars was stolen from Andrews Holiness and cash from Six Mile's children ministries was also stolen.

"If they needed the money like that, I mean, they could have come to one of the members of the church and we could have tried to help them," said Hammond.

Pastor Smith, on the other hand, says this is an opportunity for the thieves to come forward.

"I would say turn yourself in," said Smith. "You can be forgiven and we forgive you. We were angry first, we can forgive now."

Officials with both churches say they are looking into purchasing alarm systems.
