Charleston holiday parade has a new route

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The City of Charleston and the Charleston Fire Department have announced a new route for the 2013 Holiday Parade.

The parade will be held December 1 and starts at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Broad and Barre streets. The parade will then head up King and end at the intersection of Calhoun and Meeting streets.

"The City of Charleston Holiday Parade offers a great opportunity to bring the community together and appreciate the joy that comes along with the Holiday season," said Ryan Kunitzer with the CFD. "This year's special guest is Santa Claus. Santa Claus will be featured at the rear of the Parade and will be delivered to Marion Square at the conclusion of the Parade. Santa Claus will be available in Marion Square following the parade for photos."

The following street closures will be in effect until 4 p.m.

  • Barre Street beginning at 11:00 AM.
  •  Lockwood Boulevard south of Beaufain Street at 11:00 AM
  • Broad Street between Lockwood Boulevard and Barre Street at 11:00 AM.
  • Ashley Avenue between Broad Street and Beaufain Street at 11:00 AM.
  • Broad Street, King Street, Calhoun Street and adjacent streets will begin to close at 1:00 PM.
  • Access to Sergeant Jasper Apartments at 310 Broad Street will remain open until 1:30 PM.

After the parade is over, several streets will also close so everyone can clear out safely.

  • Meeting Street between Charlotte Street and Calhoun Street.
  • Henrietta Street between Meeting Street and Elizabeth Street.
  • Calhoun Street between Meeting Street and Washington Street.
  • Washington Street between Charlotte Street and Calhoun Street.

Officials say parking is NOT allowed in the following locations and your vehicle will be towed if you park there.

  • Calhoun Street between King Street and East Bay Street.
  • King Street between John Street and Broad Street.
  • Broad Street between Lockwood Boulevard and King Street.

The City has provided a voucher for two hours of free parking in city owned parking garages. You can get the voucher by clicking here. The voucher is good from November 25 until January 1.

Chanukah in the Square is also being held December 1 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Local Holocaust survivors will light the candles and Mayor Joe Riley will make welcoming remarks.
