NORTH CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- The $189 million Terminal Re-Development and Improvement Project is underway at Charleston International Airport and with it comes major changes.

"We are constructing and consolidating the TSA screening area, a new rental car pavilion, adding a third baggage carousel, expanding from 10 to 15 gates as well as renovating the entire interior of the terminal," said John Connell, the deputy and director of engineering and planning for the Charleston County Aviation Authority.

It's a big project but Connell said the renovation shouldn't cause any real turbulence during this holiday season.

"We don't expect the construction to affect passenger traffic," he said. "We are seeing with the weather that is happening across the country. We do recommend passengers to keep in touch with your airlines for any potential delays due to weather."

The airport expects more than 15,000 travelers daily.

While the construction isn't likely to slow down your travel plans, what you carry with you just might.

"Remember there is a 3-1-1 rule in place, so that's 3.1 ounce, in a quart size bag, and only one per person," said Federal Security Director Debra Engel. "Also think about the way you dress, before you come to the airport because boots, shoes, heavy items or clothing are going to need to be removed when going through checkpoint."

Engel said, those are necessary precautions that could speed up the traveling process, especially during a multi-million dollar renovation.

The project is expected to be completed in 2015.
