CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Board of Directors at James Island Charter High School approved a motion to put Vice Principal Richard Gordon in charge while Principal Robert Bohnstengel takes a leave of absence for the rest of the school year, said a parent who attended the meeting.

The board held an emergency meeting Monday night at the high school that immediately went into executive session.

Parents said the board took no questions or comments from them or anyone else who attended the meeting after the decision was made.

Bohnstengel was reportedly removed from the his position during a Board of Directors Meeting last week.

Monday afternoon, parents said they were not aware Bohnstengel could be relieved of his position because the school did not send any information home with students.

Longtime Board Member Rusty Thomas resigned from his position but would not talk about the situation with Bohnstengel or his own resignation. He simply said he had enough and would no long serve on the board.

Phone calls to the school's Board of Directors Chair and Vice Chair were not returned.
