Former CofC standout gives back to local community

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Former College of Charleston standout Michael Kohn's job is playing baseball and striking out batters, but on Wednesday the Los Angeles Angel pitcher hit a home run in the game of good will.

Kohn spent the day supplying smiles, autographs, and a full turkey dinner to families in the Lowcountry.

"It's tremendous for me to give back to families that are less fortunate here at Mitchell Elementary, and I have tremendous help doing that. It's for the kids, for the families. If I can take any burden off from a family to give them a day to be thankful for and to have a turkey dinner, it brings joy for me to do this – just to see the kids happy to have a thanksgiving dinner," he said.

Kohn's motivation to give back came from his father.

"My dad used to always do turkey dinners at the soup kitchen where I am from. That kind of inspired me, seeing my dad do that and kind of just led me to do this. If I'm able to do this, I'm going to do this as long as I can," Kohn said.

The native of Camden, S.C., was in the Charleston community last year handing out Turkey dinners at homes of the same elementary school district.

Playing for the Cougar baseball team from 2007-08, Kohn was a position player before making the transition to relief pitcher his final season. He was drafted in the 13th round of the 2008 draft as a pitcher by the L.A. Angels and made his major league debut on July 26, 2010 against the Boston Red Sox.

This past season, he overcame 2012 Tommy John surgery to perform well, posting eight holds and one win as a reliever for the Angels. He pitched 53 innings in 63 appearances and struck out 52 batters, holding opponents to a .212 batting average against him.
