Berkeley deputies searching for inmate mistakenly released

Posted: Updated:

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Berkeley County deputies are searching for a woman who was mistakenly released from the Hill-Finklea Detention Center earlier this week.

The woman, Neely Blanchard, was awaiting trial on charges that she tried to remove her child from Westview School in May. Blanchard does not have legal custody of her 4-year-old.

Blanchard and another woman, 25-year-old Ferdauss Rahmatullah, were stopped about 30 minutes after they left the school with Blanchard's 4-year-old. They were headed west on Interstate 26 at the time, police said.

Blanchard also faces charges of trespassing, disturbing school, custodial interference, conspiracy to commit custodial interference, and unlawful possession of Schedule IV narcotics. Deputies said the narcotics charge stems from prescription pills Blanchard had.

They believe she was not legally allowed to have those pills, officials said.

Online court records show Blanchard was released on bond in July, but it was revoked last week. However, the order was never filed in the jail and she was released from the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner on Wednesday.

Rahmatullah faces charges of trespassing, disturbing school, conspiracy to commit custodial interference and first-degree assault and battery, which stems from injuries a school employee sustained while trying to stop Blanchard and Rahmatullah from leaving the school.
