Tree lit in Marion Square

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Hundreds of people watched as the lights for the holiday season were switched to 'on' in Marion Square Saturday evening.

The 27th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony drew people in with the carolers, performances and the 60-foot tree.

Sanata Claus himself had the opportunity to turn the lights on, officially bringing the holiday season to the square.

"Well this is just a wonderful opportunity to kick off the holiday magic in historic Charleston," said Scott Watson, director of cultural affairs. "We working with a lot of community partners from the Charleston community, band and when Santa took the stage and we got the tree lit- it was a wonderful night here in Charleston."

Even though the tree lighting is the main attraction, some said it was all about what led up to it.

"It's everything. The festivities, the music, the dancing, the entertainment was wonderful and the people are in such a good mood," said Frances Bellamy.
