2 men arrested in fatal North Charleston shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person was found dead near a dumpster after officers responded to a call about a shooting Sunday, said officials with the North Charleston Police Department.

Police made two arrests in the case Monday night after witnesses identified the suspects through photographs.

According to the North Charleston Police Department, Michael Ferguson and Destil Cordrew were charged in the murder and attempted murder. Police found Ferguson in a home on Bennett Yard Road; Cordrew was found at a home on Outwood Drive in Charleston County.

In addition to the murder and attempted murder charges, Cordrew was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

At the Outwood Drive home, police found marijuana and cocaine as well as a 10-year-old girl. As a result, Cordrew was charged with possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and unlawful conduct towards a child.

The girl's mother, identified by police as Laquinta Smalls, was also arrested on drug charges.

Officials responded to the area of Dorsey and Dorchester roads at about 7 p.m. after a man  said he'd been shot, officials said. Officials said one victim was found unresponsive near a dumpster and was pronounced dead at the scene.

That man was identified Monday by the coroner's office as 31-year-old Cedric James. The coroner's office said James died from gunshot wounds.

The second victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, officials said.

Both suspects will go through bond court on Tuesday, police said.
