Airline merger could benefit Myrtle Beach

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A top tourism official says he's optimistic that this month's merger between US Airways and American Airlines will bring benefits to Myrtle Beach.

Brad Dean with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce tells The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that the combination of the two carriers could open new markets and new routes eventually. Dean says it will make it easier for people to link with existing flights that now serve the area.

The merger will create the world's largest airline and is expected to be completed Dec. 9. Specific changes affecting Myrtle Beach won't be known until the deal closes and changes in the airline network are announced.

The Myrtle Beach area is the center of South Carolina's $16.5 billion tourism industry.
