NEW YORK (WCIV) -- ABC News announced Monday morning that long-time weatherman for Good Morning America, Sam Champion, would be leaving the morning show for The Weather Channel.

A release from President Ben Sherwood said Champion's last day would be celebrated on Wednesday. He will be replaced by meteorologist Ginger Zee.

Champion has been a member of the ABC News network for 25 years, joining WABC in 1988 and then GMA in 2006. He most recently helped the network win a Peabody Award for his reporting during Superstorm Sandy in the Northeast.

"While there is no replacing Sam, we are in excellent hands with his storm chasing partner of the last few years, meteorologist Ginger Zee, who will take over his weather responsibilities at GMA and across ABC News," Sherwood said in a statement.
