MUSC: 2 more flu deaths last week

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two more people have died from the flu this year, according to officials at Medical University Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the two deaths happened after the patients were hospitalized last week. Both were patients at MUSC.

Details on the identities of the victims have not been released.

The first flu death of the year came early in November when a Dorchester County woman died.

The East Cooper Community Outreach launched its annual Adopt-A-Family project that works to give children of less fortunate families gifts for the holiday season.

State health officials say getting vaccinated is important for everyone six months and older and points out that it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to build up in someone's body in order to prevent the flu.

Bell says flu activity typically peaks in February in South Carolina.

State health leaders recommend avoiding people who are sick, staying home from work and errands if you are sick, washing your hands often and thoroughly, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
