CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- Something every kid looks forward to this time of year is presents; however, not every child is fortunate enough to receive gifts.

That's why local nonprofit Charleston Hope adopted three low-income schools to help make sure every child has something special to open this holiday season.

Toy by toy, the organization has collected over 1,500 gifts for students who attend Charleston Progressive Academy, Burns Elementary, and Sanders-Clyde Elementary.

"We want these students to know that they are backed by a community that is thinking about them and loves them," said Emily Hoisington, the founder of the organization and a College of Charleston sophomore.

She, along with three other friends from the College, formed Charleston Hope last November.

Now the students at Charleston Academy are excited the nonprofit is coming to their school on Dec. 13. Fourth grader Sierra Holmes already has her Christmas list ready.

"I'm looking forward to getting a doll," Holmes said.

Arianna Bumcum received a toy last year and she remembers exactly how she felt when she opened her gift.

"It made me feel kind of happy because I could get a little preview of presents before Christmas," the fourth grader said.

Brittany Hoisington, a first grade teacher at the school and board member of Charleston Hope, said it's about more than just the toys. It is also about the kids lending a helping hand.

"We are collecting hygiene kits for Crisis Ministries, so we are going to have all that wrapped up and sorted on the day that Charleston Hope comes so that our students can see what it feels like to give and to get," she said.

For people like Emily Hoisington, that is the reason for the season. To learn more about Charleston Hope, click here.
