LoveGave makes adopting a reality for local family

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 58-hour marathon of giving kicks off Thursday. Every dollar will go to orphanage causes both here in the Lowcountry and around the world.

LoveGave was started in 2010 with 12 area churches coming together with the idea to serve the City of Charleston in a way no one had ever seen or experienced before.

That resulted in raising over $200,000 in funds over three years for local charities, including Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Carolina Youth Development Center, Windwood Farm and Family Services and Eagle Harbor Ranch, along with assisting local families in the process of adopting.

LoveGave is helping families like the Gotbeters of West Ashley make their dreams of adopting a reality. Brittan Gotbeter and her husband Tommy are in the process of adopting Molly, a 2-year-old orphan living in China.

"She's been in foster homes; she's been in orphanages; she's been in different foster homes and now she is back in an orphanage waiting for us to come get her," Brittan Gotbeter said. "I see her playing sports and swimming and going to school and everything that our kids would do. We are just excited to bring here and give her a future."

And helping someone else in such a big way comes with a hefty price tag.

"Adoption is expensive and I think a lot of times people want to adopt but they think I don't have $35,000," Gotbeter said. "We may not have a lot but we have enough to help someone else."

LoveGave is the final piece of the puzzle in the Gotbeters bringing Molly home to Charleston.

"The Gotbeter family will receive $10,000 in the form of a grant to bring Molly home," LoveGave coordinator, Erin Foushee said. "What LoveGave wants is to raise awareness to make people aware of the fact that there are children that don't have a parent putting them to bed tonight."

Starting Thursday, LoveGave's 58-hour fundraiser will be held at three Walmarts across the Tri-County in West Ashley, Tanger Outlets, and Goose Creek. The goal is to raise $150,000 this year to top last year's $113,000 raised.

Along with the four local orphan charities, ten families have been chosen this year to receive funds to help with their adoption process.

A list of supplies needed for the local charities will be available at Walmart. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. Thursday and ends Saturday at 7 p.m.

The fundraiser will be streamed live on LoveGave's web site found here.
