MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) – A Berkeley County man was sentenced Wednesday to 17 years in prison for burglary and assault and battery.
According to Solicitor Scarlett Wilson's office, 25-year-old Derrick Ladon Clark was sentenced Wednesday after a jury trial. He must serve 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Prosecutors proved that in the predawn hours of Oct. 20, 2012, a man found Clark standing in his hallway and confronted him. The two fought, which led to multiple cuts and bruises to the victim.
Clark tried to escape, but the victim's fiancée tried to stop him by grabbing onto his clothes. In the fight with her, Clark lost his pants and shoes.
The victim chased Clark through the neighborhood and managed to flag down officers on patrol, who ultimately captured him.
While searching Clark's clothes, officers found a wrench and a screwdriver. During the trial, Clark admitted to using the tools to break into the victim's home, but denied that he was planning to steal anything.
