EDITOR'S NOTE: According to the police report, Jones was initially charged with spousal sexual abuse but the judge hearing the charges did not grant it. Jones has only been charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) – A teacher and coach at Stratford High School was arrested Tuesday on criminal domestic violence charges.

According to a Hanahan police report, 44-year-old Steven Douglas Jones, of Hanahan, was charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.

The report states that officers noticed a woman in police custody on a disorderly conduct charge had severe burns and bruising on her back. Officers found 10 patches of bruising and burns on the woman's body.

She was taken to Summerville Medical Center, the report states, where she told officials that the bruises came from her boyfriend, Jones. She reportedly said she was afraid to report it because of his position in the community as a teacher and coach.

Berkeley County Schools officials said Jones was placed on administrative leave while police investigate the matter.

The school district did not say what Jones teaches or in what sports he is involved.
