CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston mother was arrested Wednesday after police say she threw a knife and fork at her daughter and then hit her repeatedly with a belt.

The incident was  sparked by the girl having difficulty with her rhyming words homework, the police report states.

According to the report, 25-year-old Ebony Nero Martin, of Bogard Street, was charged with simple assault after school officials saw visible marks and bruising on the victim's hands, arms and face.

The girl told officers that she got the wounds when Martin  hit her with a leather belt. She also said a cut across her nose came from a knife that had been thrown at her, according to the report.

Officers also noted several wounds in the girl's back that she said came from being hit with a fork.

Officers contacted the girl's father and met with him, then removed the girl and her two younger siblings from the house and sent them with their grandmother in Summerville.
