Lowcounty residents arrested for evading state income taxes

CHARLESTON, S.C.(WCIV) -- Investigators with the South Carolina Department of Revenue arrested four individuals from the Lowcountry in connection with evading individual income taxes, according to department officials.

Henry Moultrie, 59, of North Charleston, Joseph Gourdine, 42, Jerome Haley, 67, both of Charleston, and Carlton Perkins, 50, from Hampton County were arrested Thursday and Friday for separate tax charges.

Moultrie was charged with six counts of attempting to evade or defeat a tax. Officials said Moultrie filed "exempt" status with his employer and little to no taxes were withheld from his pay from 2006 to 2011. He has a tax liability of $11,806, officials said. If convicted, he could face up to $60,000 in fines and/or up to 30 years in prison.

Gourdine was charged with three counts of attempting to evade taxes in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. He has a state tax liability of $4,266 and could face up to $30,000 in fines and/or 15 years in prison.

Haley was charged with four counts of failure to file income tax returns and three counts of attempting to evade taxes for years 2004 through 2010. Officials said his outstanding liability is $9,837. If convicted, he could face fines of up to $70,000 and/or up to 19 years in prison.

Perkins is charged with five counts of attempting to evade income taxes from the years 2007 to 2011. Officials said his outstanding tax liability is $10,950. He faces up to $50,000 in fines and/or up to 25 years in prison.

Officials said more arrests are expected.
