COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 6-year-old boy trying to catch his school bus was hit by a truck when he crossed the road Tuesday morning, officials said.

According to Colleton Fire and Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the accident happened around 7:20 a.m. just outside of the town of Walterboro on Highway 64.

State highway patrol officials said the boy was at fault in the accident, so the driver of the truck will not be charged.

Cpl. Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the boy walked into the road in front of the truck before the bus had come to a stop and put out its stop arm or activated its lights.

The boy was thrown at least 10 feet, McRoy say, and landed in a ditch. He was taken toe Medical University Hospital by ambulance in serious condition.

McRoy said the boy had several injuries, including a head injury.

The boy's parents were with their son at the time of the accident, McRoy said.
