CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Local police officers hit the roof to raise money and give away free doughnuts.

During the Cops on Doughnut Shops campaign, Lowcountry police officers climbed up on the roof of the Savannah Highway Krispy Kreme to raise money for the Special Olympics of South Carolina.

Folks who donated $20 got a free coupon for a dozen doughnuts.

The campaign started at 6 a.m. and officers took donations until 6 p.m. The 12 hour drive was then repeated from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Over the three-day fundraiser, they raised $6,200, falling shy of their $10,000 goal.

There were also two doughnut eating contests at 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Contestants competed to see who could eat a dozen glazed doughnuts the quickest.
