OKATIE, S.C. (AP) - A Lowcountry pastor is concerned about the safety of drivers and headstones in his church's 19th Century cemetery now that the main road onto Hilton Head Island has been widened.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the widening U.S. 278 has left a strip of grass no wider than a church pew between the shoulder and headstones at the Indian Hill Baptist Church.
Pastor Doug Ludlam worries cars may hit gravestones. A car crashed into the cemetery three years ago but the headstones were spared. The cemetery dating to 1885 has graves of some Civil War soldiers.
Transportation Department program manager Brent Rewis says the road was widened about two-and-a-half feet toward the church. He says he does not think it makes a difference from a previous widening.
