SCHP: Motorcyclists' fatal wreck did not involve 2nd vehicle

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A motorcycle crash that resulted in the driver's death was not a hit-and-run, state Highway Patrol officials said Thursday evening.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol was investigating the crash initially after believing that it resulted from a driver cutting off a motorcycle near Summerville last week.

"After [media] posted the information from our flier, we received several phone calls from independent witnesses and it turns out this was not a hit and run," said SCHP Sgt Bob Beres. "This is being investigated as a single motorcycle collision."

The Dorchester County coroner has identified the victim as 51-year-old Lt. Col James Michael Ball. The autopsy showed cause of death as Blunt Force Injury of Head, subarachnoid and subdural hemorrhages.

According to his obituary, Ball was retired from the Army and will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Lt. Col. "Chigger" Ball was a captain for CenTex Patriot Guard Riders and a member of U.S. Veterans Motorcycle Club.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, in the North Charleston Church of Christ on Patriot Boulevard at 1 p.m..

Friends are invited to join his family to share stories on Thursday, Dec. 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the J. Henry Stuhr Northwoods Chapel.
