2 teachers save bus from crashing into ditch

Posted: Updated:

AWENDAW, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two teachers from Pinckney Elementary School in Mount Pleasant are being called heroes. The Charleston County School District says their quick thinking kept a bus full of children from flipping over into a ditch.

According to a district spokesman, the bus driver who was not wearing a seat belt drove through a stop sign while making a left-hand turn.

The momentum flung the driver out of his seat.

As the bus headed for a ditch, Lee Morris, a sign language interpreter, grabbed the wheel while fourth grade teacher Amy Ryan slammed on the brakes.

Officials with the school district say the class was heading home from a field trip and no one was hurt.

As for the bus driver, officials confirm he is no longer employed. He was also cited for driving too fast for conditions and for not wearing a seat belt.
