BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Officials have asked a contractor to correct a sign that misspells the Jasper County town of Hardeeville.
The sign on state Highway 170 that directs drivers to U.S. Highway 278 is missing one of the double e's in Hardeeville. It does spell Hilton Head Island, Sun City and Savannah, Ga., correctly.
South Carolina Department of Transportation Maintenance Engineer Maurice Allen told The Beaufort Gazette that the agency has heard from plenty of people pointing out the mistake.
Allen says a contractor makes the green signs and should deliver a new one with Hardeeville spelled right for free in the next two weeks.
