An 'icy' Christmas in the Lowcountry

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's snowing in Summerville -- sort of. At Ice Age Ice Sculptures of Summerville, the temperature is a cool 15 degrees and it's the only joint in town with a White Christmas.

"We shovel snow about three to four times a day," said Ice Age sculptor Brian Connors. "I think that is the shock, 'You carve ice in South Carolina?'"

Brian Connors has been an ice sculptor for 25 years and works in a huge, walk-in freezer seven days a week.

"Right after Christmas to New Year's Eve we do 45 blocks, about 80 different pieces, of ice in that short amount of time," said Connors.

Working with 300-pound blocks of ice, Connors crafts his masterpiece to add a little bit of majestic elegance to events all around town.

"It adds to the enhancement of a buffet it cools your food or seafood down or luge for liquor or even bars for ice -- it just adds a whole different level of elegance to your buffet or event."

From snowflakes to reindeer to Santa and his sleigh, Connors' workshop is as busy as St. Nicks during the holidays.

"The game is to always have someone go up [and touch the ice] and go, 'That's ice?' and when it's melting and they can do that you've won the game," he said.
