6,000 meals prepared by Red Cross for Christmas

Posted: Updated:

ANDREWS, S.C. (WCIV) -- Six-thousand Christmas meals will be prepared by American Red Cross volunteers in Williamsburg, Georgetown and Horry counties this year.

Most of them will be delivered to people's homes, but many were served at Christmas Eve feasts on Tuesday.

At Trinity United Methodist Church in Andrews, hundreds of people lined up for the communal meal.

"We start cooking 10 days before Christmas, (and use) over 6,600 pounds of turkey, 2,000 pounds of green beans, 950 pounds of bread and 2,400 pounds of dressing," said volunteer Janice Sialiano. "It's incredible."

The Red Cross partners with Bi-Lo to provide the food.

This is the sixth year the Andrews branch of the Red Cross has taken part, but the 25th year the Red Cross has hosted the Christmas meal in the Lowcountry.

To take part in the meal, head to Belin Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet on Wednesday. Food will be served from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for free.

The Red Cross will also serve Christmas Day dinner at Risen Christ Lutheran Church in North Myrtle Beach and St. Johns Greek Orthodox Church in Myrtle Beach from 1 - 3 p.m.
