Fla. driver dies speeding from SC traffic stop

Posted: Updated:

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 45-year-old Florida driver has died after speeding away from officers during a Surfside Beach traffic stop.

Investigators said Robin Miller of Florahome, Fla., died at the hospital around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, several hours after wrecking a 1981 Datsun 280Z.

Authorities say a Surfside Beach Police officer saw the car driving over 70 mph in a 45 mph zone and swerving between lanes on U.S. 17 Business. The officer tried to pull the Datsun over, but the driver started going faster.

Investigators say the officer lost sight of the car and a short time later someone called police and said they saw the Datsun crash into the woods.

State troopers are investigating the wreck, and Surfside Beach officials are doing an internal review of the officer's actions.
