Midlands Christmas trees being turned into mulch

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Christmas trees can now go from being a beautiful holiday decoration to useful mulch.

Keep the Midlands Beautiful is offering "Grinding of the Greens" at a variety of locations throughout Richland and Lexington Counties.

The service is available starting Thursday and runs through Jan. 9. Organizers say the tree stand and all ornaments and lights must be removed. Wreaths and other greenery will not be accepted.

Trees can be dropped off at 25 sites. For a complete list, please call (803) 733-1139 or visit www.keepthemidlandsbeautiful.org.

Free mulch from the recycled Christmas trees will be available to the public on Jan. 11.
