Holiday clean-up: What to do with all your paper, cardboard and greenery

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's almost time to take down the tree. Here's a list of locations you can drop off your holiday greenery and go green in the process.

If your community doesn't have curbside pickup for Christmas trees, you can drop it off at a recycling center. For a list of locations in Charleston County, click here.

In Charleston County, some residents are getting incentives to drop off their tree. Taking your tree to the Bees Ferry Landing Compost Facility from January 2 through the 11th will get you a free bag of compost.

Tips on recycling no matter where you go:

  • Remember to remove all decorations such as lights, tinsel, ornaments, etc.
  • Some municipalities will pick them up curbside, or they can be taken to a convenience center.
  • All paper, including gift wrap and cardboard, and commingled products (plastics #1-7, glass containers and aluminum and steel cans) can also be recycled
  • Convenience centers also accept used motor oil and cooking oil from fried turkeys, electronics, household hazardous materials, batteries, paint, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and holiday light strands.
  • Drop off packaging material such as Styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap at your local shipping store; they will gladly reuse it.
  • Remember to recycle outdated electronics if a new, replacement gadget is received.
