CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- When Sidney Sanders left Burke High School, few people thought he would be doing what he's is doing, when and where he's doing it.

Sanders was not recruited to play basketball at the college level out of high school.

He went to a junior college in Florida for two years before receiving an offer from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a small Division I school in New Jersey, just outside of New York City.

Sanders had an uneventful year as a junior but just before this season, a coaching change was made and things changed for the Burke High graduate.

"Last year I was averaging four points. Now this year, I'm up to 18 and five, so I mean, I guess the workouts in the summer really helped me because they really improved my game," he said.

The team's leading scorer led his team to some big things, averaging 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in a Big East win over Seton Hall University.

"It was a good feeling. I went out there just to play basketball," he said. "Playing against Seton Hall really showed me I can play against anybody."

He proved that by scoring 16 points against the number one team in America, the University of Arizona.

"It was probably the best feeling I ever had playing in front of that many people, except probably the state championship game in high school," he said. "Playing like that in front of thousands of fans every night is something I dream of."

This year is a dream for sanders. For the small guard from Charleston, it's his final time to shine and do big things in the Big Apple.

"I mean, it's different. It's a lot faster. I'm always in the city. And everything I did is a whole lot faster than Charleston," he said. "This is the town that never sleeps."

Getting better with time, Sanders hopes his time to shine will come in March.
