NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Multiple fire crews responded early Friday morning to a structure fire on Iris Street in North Charleston.

Dispatchers confirmed that units were called out just after 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Multiple EMS and North Charleston police crews also responded to the scene.

Flames have done heavy damage to the inside and the roof of the structure. A neighbor says the building is known as the "White House." The neighbor says homeless people live in the building on a transitional basis.

A spokesperson with the North Charleston Fire Department said that crews battling the fire from inside the home nearly two hours after it first started.

One resident was assessed by Charleston County EMS and released at the scene. Seven people are being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to officials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

To provide assistance to the victims of the fire, contact the local American Red Cross chapter.
