Man, 19, arrested for felony DUI after Hilton Head crash

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A teen was arrested and charged with a felony DUI after Beaufort County deputies say he wrecked his SUV and severely wounded another teen in the vehicle on Christmas night.

According to the sheriff's office, 19-year-old Matthew Zitello was driving a 2005 Infiniti SUV when he crashed on Seabrook Drive. Officials say they found him sitting on the side of the road near the intersection of Dolphin Head and Seabrook drives.

Deputies say the SUV was off the road, upside down, and 100 feet into the treeline. Inside the SUV was a 19-year-old girl who was unconscious.

Officials said she appeared to have life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Hilton Head Airport and then flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the crash and charged Zitello with felony DUI.

He is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.

The Beaufort County Alcohol Beverage Control Investigators are following up the Highway Patrol investigation since the accident involved an underage person who was allegedly inebriated.

That office is trying to find out how Zitello got the alcohol.
