Firefighters respond to North Charleston fire

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Firefighters spent part of Saturday afternoon fighting a fire at an abandoned building in North Charleston.

Officials at the scene say the abandoned building on Scott Street used to be a military barracks and at one time served as a store, but has been empty for several years.

In a release from the North Charleston Fire Department, officials said the first crews to respond found flames and smoke coming from the abandoned commercial building. Firefighters found several cans of paint thinner outside the building.

Officials said the cans of thinner were far enough away from the building that they did not pose a threat to the firefighters.

According to officials, it took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control. Crews were still at the scene of the fire Saturday evening checking for hot spots.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the fire.

Officials have not said how the fire started; the cause is under investigation, officials said.
