HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 19-year-old boy is facing alcohol violation charges in connection with a traffic accident that injured a 19-year-old girl, said officials with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Matthew Andrew Zitello is charged with felony driving under the influence one count of minor in possession of beer/wine.

Deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident with injuries on Christmas night at about 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Seabrook Drive and Dolphin Head Way, officials said.

Officials said Zitello was driving the vehicle and his passenger, Vianery Haromi Garcia, had to be freed from the vehicle.

Garcia was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Deputies say the vehicle was off the road, upside down and 100 feet into the treeline.

Members of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Alcoholic Beverage Control Team determined Zitello has purchased a 25-ounce can of beer at the Pantry convenience store on Gumtree Road at about 10 p.m. the night of the accident, officials said.

After reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, officials said they determined Zitello purchased the beer without showing any identification.

The clerk, Mitchell Dagan Young, 23, and the store were cited with one count of sale of beer/wine to person under 21.

Young was arrested and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center where he is awaiting a bond hearing, officials said.

If you have any additional information, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (843) 255-3425.
