WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fatal hunting incident in Colleton County.

Colleton County Coroner Rich Harvey says 67-year-old William Heape Sr., of Varnville, was shot and killed. Chief Barry McRoy says the group was deer hunting about a half mile into the woods when the man was shot. He says another hunter in the group did attemptCPR  but, could not revive him.

An autopsy is planned for Wednesday morning with new information expected to be released sometime in the afternoon.

A DNR spokesman says Heape has hunted on the grounds before and was not unfamiliar with the area.

DNR would not say if the shooter was a part of the hunting group the victim was with. Representatives cant say if any charges will be filed until after the investigation is complete.
