Charleston man charged with drug crimes, assaulting officers

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston man was arrested early Monday morning after police say he was spotted loitering outside a closed church and found with cocaine base after a fight with officers.

According to a Charleston police report, 22-year-old Rashad Robinson was spotted by patrol officers near Aiken and Line streets shortly after midnight Monday. The officer recognized Robinson as a known drug dealer and confronted him.

The report states Robinson had been banned from the nearby public housing units, so officers considered it a cause for concern that he was a block away from the area.

Robinson consented to a search, the report states, but backed away when the officer tried to check his pants.

The officer told Robinson he was being arrested for loitering and would be searched at the Charleston County Detention Center to verify that he was not carrying illegal drug. At that point, Robinson tried to run, the report states.

However, three other officers were able to stop him, but he put up a fight, kicking and swinging at the officers, according to the report. The officers were finally able to detain Robinson after shocking him twice with a Taser.

At the detention center, Robinson was searched and officers found 1.8 grams of cocaine base.

He was charged with four counts of resisting arrest and assault on police, loitering, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine base, and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine base in close proximity to a park.
