3 state parks to be burned this winter

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- Three state parks will be burned during the winter, according to a prescribed burn plan from the South Carolina State Park Service.

The burns will happen at Cheraw and Givhans Ferry state parks and the Hampton Plantation State Historic Site near Charleston.

Officials say the burns are weather-dependent, so they will not know when the burns will happen until two or three days before they happen. Fire and police in each of the areas will be notified when the schedule is set.

The park service uses prescribed burns to restore the land and preserve habitats, as well as use them to cut down on the fuels that feed forest fires by burning the undergrowth.
