Patriots Point hosts 'open cockpit' day this weekend

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is hosting its first Open Cockpit Sunday of the year this weekend.

According to the museum, guests will be able to explore the cockpits of some of the museum's aircraft, including the SBD Dauntless, F-9 Cougar, H-1 Huey, S-3 Viking, H-3 Sea King, F-18 Hornet and the A-6 Intruder.

Volunteers and staff members will be on hand to answer questions about the aircraft.

"Open Cockpit Sunday has been successful in aiding our efforts to educate the public about our rich military history," said Executive Director Mac Burdette.  "It's part of our mission; but it's also a great opportunity for our visitors – children and adults alike – to experience Patriots Point in a whole new way and to walk in the steps of heroes."

Normal museum rates apply, museum officials said.

The Open Cockpit day is being held on Jan. 12 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
