Investigation continues at Goose Creek house fire

Posted: Updated:

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) -- Firefighters are battling a fire in Berkeley County that has a "strong possibility" of being a meth lab explosion, according to Dan Moon, public information office for the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

"I don't want to say until we've confirmed through the investigation that it was indeed a meth fire," Moon said.

Crews were investigating the fire at an Aldene Avenue home and county drug enforcement units were called in to assist. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

Deputies arrested 21-year-old Justin Wright for outstanding warrants for manufacturing meth and larceny. They have identified him as a suspect in the Aldene Avenue fire. Officials said witnesses saw Wright and an unknown female fleeing the scene after the fire broke out.

"We have a female subject that was also seen leaving the scene with him. That subject is unknown right now. We're attempting to identify and locate the individual," Moon said.

A hazardous materials crew was also called to the scene. It arrived around 8 p.m., officials said.

The home is just a few blocks from Sedgefield Middle School and Goose Creek High School.

Officials said they did not know of any injuries in the fire. They also said the home sustained "extensive damage." Crews could be on scene investigating through Thursday, officials said.

On Thursday, the investigation continued.

Investigators from SLED and the DEA returned to this house, to look for evidence in the day light.

For neighbors like Angela Webb the sight stirs up bad memories of the Pine Harbor Apartment fire.

"That was a terrible thing over there that day with the loss of the lives that was happening. That was a bad day," said Webb.

Webb says she was visiting her daughter almost two years ago when a suspected meth lab burned several apartments and killed three people in the Pine Harbor apartment complex.

"We ended up having to leave our apartments stay out of them for hours and hours and hours," said Webb.

She says it's because of that fire, she recognized the smell coming from the house across the street last night.

"It's crazy, we don't like it in our neighborhood we don't want it in our neighborhood," said Webb.

Howard Cousins says he used to be good friends with old owner who died a few years ago. He says it's hard for him to believe a suspicious fire happened next door.

"Very concerned very, you know, they're 20 feet from my house. It really concerns me," said Cousins.

He says whoever is responsible for the fire should go to prison.

"Whatever the max is that's what I'd like to see it," said Cousins.
