DHEC wants consultant to evaluate landfill cleanup

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State environmental regulators say they want a third party to evaluate how to fund the containment and maintenance of a Sumter County landfill for the next nine decades.

On Wednesday, the Department of Health and Environmental Control is putting out a request for proposals for an environmental assessment at the Pinewood site.

The 279-acre landfill was operated by industrial waste hauler Safety-Kleen. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2000 and agreed to pay more than $148 million to cover the cost of shutting down the landfill and pay for future cleanup.

DHEC director Catherine Templeton says the site is safe and that there's enough money to maintain it for several year, but she says a new plan is needed to find a better way to fund that maintenance.
