NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Despite warnings that it was too cold outside, the Charleston Animal Society says someone has been leaving their dogs to fend for themselves in record cold temperatures.

CAS officials said 27 hound dogs were brought in to their shelter on Remount Road. Most of the dogs were found abandoned with their collars taken off.

"It is against the law to abandon an animal in South Carolina," says Charleston Animal Society Senior Director of Animal Services Pearl Sutton, "and you can clearly see on many of these hound dogs where the collars were removed."

Because of the influx in dogs, the CAS faces a critical overcrowding situation and are offering free adoptions of adult dogs to make room for all of the animals.

For those considering adopting, CAS officials want to remind you that adult dogs are usually already housebroken, have some degree of training and are eager for human companionship.

If you can adopt, please visit the CAS at 2455 Remount Road or go to www.CharlestonAnimalSociety.org .
