Small earthquake detected near Summerville

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The United States Geological Survey detected a very slight earthquake near Summerville Thursday afternoon.

According to the USGS, the epicenter of the quake was 5 kilometers west-southwest of Centerville. The 2.2-magnitude quake may have caused some slight rumbling, but no serious damage.

College of Charleston Associated Professor of Geology Dr. Erin Beutel has said in the past that the number of quakes experienced in the area vary year by year and that there is no reason to think the small rumbles are leading up to a larger event.
