NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The S.C. Highway Patrol says a bicyclist died at Medical University Hospital after getting hit by a fire truck in North Charleston late Thursday.

Officials say the bicyclist was riding along Cross County Road at the time of the wreck. A spokesperson for the S.C. Highway Patrol says a fire truck hit that bike rider just after 11 p.m.

Officials say the North Charleston Fire Department fire crew was responding to a call just before the crash and that  the truck did have lights and a siren activated.

The coroner has identified the victim as Jihad Abdur-Rahim, 39, of North Charleston. He died from blunt trauma.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident and on behalf of the crew and the entire North Charleston Fire Department we want to express our sincere condolences to the family of this person," North Charleston Fire Chief Greg Bulanow said. "Our hearts go out to them and we are deeply concerned for everyone involved."

The S.C. Highway Patrol MAIT team is investigating the crash. The driver of the engine is being placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
