Most SC health care signups are people over 45

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - More than half of the 24,000 people who have signed up in South Carolina for health insurance under President Barack Obama's law are 45 years old or older.

The Obama administration released age and gender breakdowns of the people who have enrolled in government-subsidized private insurance by the end of December.

Less than 30 percent of South Carolina enrollees are under 35. The administration reports 57 percent of them are women and four in five received financial help to pay for their plans.

The majority of people who enrolled in the state didn't go for the cheapest or the most comprehensive plans. Two-thirds of enrollees opted for the "sliver" plan.

Open enrollment for the insurance runs through March 31.
