JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Investigators spent time Monday searching for evidence after a passenger was injured in a shooting on the James Island connector.

A mother said her son and two other people were on the way home from a night club on Folly Road when gunfire struck their car.

She said she is relieved her worst nightmare didn't come true.

"I thank God that they're all right.  And they came through all right," said Mary Hudson.

Her son and a police officer called her from the scene early Monday morning.

Three people were in the car when someone fired shots from an SUV.

"I don't know what their beef was or what was going on. - what happened.  I just hope wherever you're at, talk and just give yourself up," said Hudson.

Officials with the Charleston Police Department said the gunfire shattered a car window.

A bullet struck a man sitting in the passenger seat and the SUV drove away. Officials said the man was hit in the thigh but is expected to be okay.

"It's bad when you're out here shooting at people for no reason," said Hudson. "I don't know what the reason is. Only God knows what the reason was and what happened.  But God protected everybody."

Kiefer Thomas said he saw police cars when he was driving home. He said he was surprised to learn there had been a shooting.

"I've never heard of any kind of like shootings over around this area.  'Cause it doesn't really seem like that bad of a neighborhood," he said.

As police search for the shooter, Hudson says she hopes crimes like this will stop.

"I don't want to see nobody get hurt.  And I don't want to see no child sitting up in jail for a crime that you commit," she said.

Officials said no arrests have been made.
